Passport to Safety: A Natural Fit with New Brunswick High School Programs

Since 1999, the WHSCC has been pleased to offer New Brunswick schools and youth educational settings an array of free resources that support health and safety education. The goal is to provide educators with useful tools to help teach young people to keep safe and free from injury within their daily activities and, be able to transfer these skills into the world of work. Click for additional information on available free health and safety resources from the WHSCC.

Passport to Safety is a great link with the WHSCC's current youth school programs and, supports goals in helping reduce the occurrence of workplace accidents by providing young workers with workplace safety awareness. Not only used as a support with the existing efforts of the WHSCC, Passport to Safety can be used as a tool to validate and reinforce a basic minimum standard that is offered in school-based programs.

Use of Passport to Safety in New Brunswick schools provides benefits at many levels.

  • Firstly, teachers can use it as an end of safety unit/module evaluation tool or use it to help promote safety education if there is insufficient time to cover an entire unit/module.
  • Secondly, in participating in Passport to Safety, students are recognized for their accomplishments (via the transcript and certificate) and the test reinforces their learning of workplace safety.
  • Thirdly, all (schools, teachers/educators, parents, the WHSCC) can receive affirmation that youth are receiving the foundations of workplace health and safety prior to entering the workforce. Passport to Safety is also setting a national standard for workplace safety awareness and as such, students' involvement in the program will be recognized across the country.

The following chart outlines the links between Passport to Safety with current high school curriculum and programs within the New Brunswich school system.
