Bright ideas: Using Passport to Safety as a Learning Tool in your Classroom

Passport to Safety works for both teachers and students. It's an easy way to help validate that students have learned and can apply the health and safety knowledge they've gathered. It gives students a tangible certificate they can show to potential employers to indicate their basic awareness of workplace health and safety and readiness for workplace-specific training. Remember, Passport to Safety is not a stand-alone program, but adds value to the safety education already provided in your classroom or school.

"How to" suggestions:

  1. Assign each student an individual Passport to Safety PIN # and password (HINT: keep your own record of students and PIN #s and passwords to make your tracking easier and to help students who may lose their account information).

  2. Give students a few days to take the test and have them hand in to you their official Passport to Safety transcripts. When students successfully complete the test, Passport to Safety will award them a certificate and will allow them to print a transcript from their own Passport to Safety account. Only those students who have completed the test can print the transcript!

Hold your class in a computer lab and have the students do their Passport to Safety test in-class. Another bright idea - if you already have a volunteer who works with your class or school, ask them to come and help your students through the test in the computer lab.

  3. You can check your students' progress on the test using your own personal Passport to Safety teacher account.

Make sure students keep their PIN #s and passwords in a safe place as their memberships are LIFETIME memberships.

As a suggestion, have each student record their PIN# and password on a piece of construction paper the size of a credit card. Then, if possible, laminate all cards and encourage students to keep their card in their wallet for future referencing.

Your students should be encouraged to update their transcripts, adding in any of their safety-related achievements. These can include swimming credentials, boating safety, babysitting courses, or any other course or program that is linked to promoting personal safety or safe decision making. The transcript can be printed and updated as often as they like and will be a terrific addition to their portfolios. It should be attached to every job application or resume they give to potential employers.
