Passport to Safety: A Natural Fit with Nova Scotia High School Programs

Since 2003, the WCBNS has been pleased to offer Nova Scotia schools and youth settings with free resources that support workplace injury prevention. The goal is to provide educators with useful tools to help young people to learn about keeping safe, and to be able to transfer this learning into the world of work. Click for additional information on available free health and safety resources from the WCBNS.

Passport to Safety is a great link with the WCBNS’ goal to reduce workplace injury and illness by providing young workers with workplace safety awareness. Passport to Safety can be used as a tool to validate and reinforce a basic minimum standard that is offered in school-based programs and welcomed by employers.

Use of Passport to Safety in Nova Scotia schools provides benefits at many levels.

  • Firstly, teachers can use it as an end of safety unit/module evaluation tool or to help promote safety education without the evaluation end piece.
  • Secondly, in participating in Passport to Safety, students are recognized for their accomplishments (via the transcript and certificate) with a test that reinforces their learning of workplace safety.
  • • Thirdly, all Passport participants (students, schools, educators AND parents) receive affirmation that youth are receiving the foundations of workplace health and safety prior to entering the workforce. Passport to Safety is also setting a national standard for workplace safety awareness and as such, students' involvement in the program will be recognized across the country.

If you are not an O2 program teacher, but are interested in accessing young worker safety awareness services, including Passport to Safety, for your students; or if you teach in any of these areas:

* PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & CAREER EDUCATION
* CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION
* TECHNOLOGY
* SCIENCE
* BUSINESS EDUCATION
* ENTREPRENEURSHIP,

We encourage you to consider including Young Worker Health and Safety Awareness, including the Passport to Safety test, to your course outline.
