Falls can cause very serious, and sometimes permanently disabling injuries and even death. In almost every case, steps could have been taken to prevent the fall in the first place. Thinking ahead, planning the work better and communicating to fellow workers would have all helped prevent the fall at a convenience store in the following video.
PS – the people who provided this video clip state that the worker is all right.

This may have been prevented if:

  • Access to basement was relocated out of this high traffic area
  • Access to basement was locked and only used when the store is closed and other workers aren’t around
  • Access door wasn’t kept open and unattended
  • Workers who opened the door informed everyone in the area that the door was open
  • A worker stayed at the open door to warn others that it was open
  • A guardrail was positioned around the hole in the floor when the door was open to prevent anyone from falling in
  • A metal grate was put down when the door was open to allow light and ventilation into the basement and to keep workers from falling in
